What was it like having the monster make up applied?
Yeah, sitting in that chair for six hours! Oh when I first put the mask on? That was another element that we sat down and discussed. We decided we didn't want to do something with lots of special effects, and sort of supernatural creatives, we wanted to keep the biblical side, element of the character there, when we were going to do the transformation to the Nephelim and to show aging and weariness of the character.
Let's just talk generally about what it was like working what kind of fun you had, what the actors on set were like?
God it was terrible! The atmosphere on set was just really bad! The atmosphere on set was great. I think when you're doing any filming the one thing that helps is if you are all on location somewhere. And I don't know whose idea it was to shoot the first 3 weeks or 4 weeks that we did in Reading, where everyone was on location and it just forced everyone to mix in so it didn't become cliquey, like where the actors hung out with the actors and the sparks hang out with the sparks and so no one became segregated. Instead, everyone just mixed together. I think then, when we came on set there was a sense of everyone working together for the same result, you know and from my own experience, that's always the best atmosphere to work under. I think you get the best results then as it makes everybody feel like they are participating for the same thing. On this job I have to say it was great like that, everybody was really supportive on set throughout the crew.
They played lots of practical jokes on you, didn't they?
I loved that. Because we were on one hectic schedule to try and get it done, to try and make three 90 minute films in 2 months so the schedule was pretty full on. Everyone is under high pressure and stress to get this done but there is always time for it if an actor wants to make a joke and break the atmosphere to make people feel good when they come to work.
Especially when you're snogging?
Yes, the more times I got to do that the better! Just you know, it makes a happier environment to come to work to and you know that if you can have a laugh while you're doing creative stuff then you are getting the work done as well then that's great
I heard you had a strong bond with the make-up girls?
The make-up girls were just the best, they really were companions, I lived in the make up room. We covered a wide range of topics sitting in the makeup chair. It's always great going into the make-up room because everything smells nice and you get pampered and we like that- it was cool! It was great cos that the make-up room became a focal point for everybody. People from the office were coming down pouring into the make-up room for a gossip and dirty chat.
